A 12-year-old boy in Uttar Pradesh in India, has a mysterious condition
that has caused his hands to grow to a massive 30cm long and he has been
labelled the "Devil".
A 12-year-old boy from a village in Uttar Pradesh is suffering from
a mysterious condition that has rendered his hands useless as they have
grown to 12 inches. His plight has made the villagers think that he is
cursed and they all shun him for his unnatural condition.
Tarik has been shunned by all his friends and refused entry to
every school in his village area. He is unable to dress himself and has
been labelled as the ‘devil’ as the villagers think that his large hands
are a result of a curse. The young boy lives with his brother and works
in a tea stall.
Tarik’s aunt Pushpa reportedly said, “Since birth, his hands
were always big. As he started growing his hands got bigger. When his
father was alive he took him to the local doctors a lot. But his father
passed away and he only has his mother now, so he can’t get any
treatment.”
Tarik has an older brother named Hargyan who takes care of him and
helps him with his simple daily tasks that his large hands prevent him
from being able to accomplish.
Tarik’s brother Hargyan said, “His hands are really big. I have
never seen such big hands in my life. He is stuck in his life. He can’t
even change his clothes. I have to look after Tarik. Sadly that has
resulted in Tarik being bullied by his neighbours and friends. He was
also refused admission to school.”
Tarik has been shunned all his life and has been living a reclusive existence. He said,
“I had few friends in the beginning but now I don’t have any. People
are scared of my hands. I wanted to study but school refused my
admission.”
Tarik’s condition does not have any medical name and cannot be
categorized in any known deformity, his condition has not been diagnosed
by the doctors.
Tarik’s brother Hargyan said, “The school authorities said they
could not take Tarik as his huge hands will scare other kids. He was
denied admission in almost every school.”
Pushpa, Tarik’s aunt believes that the condition is from God and he will get normal hands soon. She said, “He
can’t dress without brother’s help. His life is totally dependent on
us. We have to take care of him all the time. But I am sure he will get a
better treatment.”
Tarik’s family had approached many doctors but they were always met
with disappointment. However, on a recent visit, Dr Pawan Kumar Gandhi
said, “Tarik’s problem is actually a mystery to us. We’ve never seen
a patient with this before. I have seen a few similar cases but they
had Elephant Foot disease, his condition seems to be similar to that.
"Poor boy hopes for a better treatment so he can live a normal
life – Chances are low but nothing is impossible. In the age of science,
there is lots of research, so nothing is impossible.”
Tarik wants to get rid of his impediment and wants to lead a normal
happy life, where he can go to school and play like normal kids.
